In the future, after the Great Disaster gave rise to the dominance of the Animal Men, major cities lay in ruin. New York City was partially underwater along with the Statue of Liberty. Tribes of Animal Men agreed to split of up geographic areas as their own territory. New York City fell under the Tigermen and became part of the Tiger Empire.
Recently, a time fissure opened up on the torch of the Statue of Liberty. Batman went through seeking a cure for a rare disease. After acquiring a solution from Dr. Canus, he and Kamandi returned to the fissure but were pursued by Ratmen.
As the Tiger Empire rapidly expanded west, they came into constant conflict with the neighboring Ape People. Under Grodd's leadership, the Apes managed to invade the Tiger Empire's capital city, a walled city characterized by a large citadel, until an alliance pushed them into retreat. Tiger City later fell under the control of Misfit and the Joker despite opposition by Kamandi and Prince Tuftan.
