Oa is one of the oldest planets in the universe. After the Maltusians evolved, the immigrated to Oa, a lifeless desert planet, and used it for their base of operations as the Guardians of the Universe. Oa also serves as headquarters for the Green Lantern Corps. Along with having the occassional Green Lantern debriefing on Oa, the other defense is a protocol that creates a force field of green energy around the planet.
The citadel houses a dining hall, meeting hall, The Hazard Simulation Facility, The Hall of Great Service, The Sector House, The Sciencells, The Memorial Hall, and the Central Power Battery. The Hazard Simulation Facility is the Corps' training area where Green Lanterns can test themselves in non-lethal scenerios. The Hall of Great Service is the library and holds the Book of Oa, the bible and lawbook of the Corps. A Green Lantern holds the position of archivist superior.
Sector Houses allow Lanterns to hold criminals as they await escort back to the Oan sciencells. The Sciencells were constructed to contain the most ruthless criminals in the universe. The Memorial Hall honors Green Lanterns who lost their lives in the line of duty. A Green Lantern named Morro acts as the Hall's cryptkeeper.
The Central Power Battery is the repository of the collective power of the Guardians of the Universe and the Green Lantern Corps. Its contents are believed to be unlimited as it has to service the Guardians, 3600 active Green Lanterns, 3600 alternate Green Lanterns in training, and planetary defenses at all times. Despite its fame, Oa has been attacked on several occassions by powerful aliens such as Despero, the Reach, and Starro. While on route to Earth, Starro overran Oa by first infecting Hal Jordan while he was on Earth. Guy Gardner and Kilowog teamed up with the Space Ranger, Captain Comet, and Ultra in a last ditch effort that ended with them being defeated.
