Machu Picchu, translated as "Old Peak," was a city built by the Incas in approximately 1430 AD near the Urubamba Valley, a mountain ridge in present day Peru. The architecture is reminiscent of classic Incan design, polished dry stone walls. In the Sacred District, the Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, and Room of the Three Windows are located. Centuries later, Machu Picchu was abandoned as the Spanish conquered the Incas. Then in 1911, it was rediscovered by American historian, Hiram Bingham and converted into a tourist attraction, "The Lost City of the Incas." The city was preserved and untouched by the Spanish and is widely considered a vital cultural and sacred landmark.

It is accepted that the Incas were advanced in several fields of study, including astronomy. They made their observations related to the precession of the equinoxes. The Incas created a gyroscope that measures the Earth's axis of rotation. The gyroscope continues to run on its own and is said to keep the world turning and perpetuate an eternal equinox, perhaps the inspiration for ideas such as yin and yang. Another legend is also attached to it, if one spirit in perfect balance sacrifices another to the gyroscope, that individual will ascend beyond human flesh and become a being of pure energy.

Equinox issued a challenge for Batman to meet him at Machu Picchu. Batman accepted and took Dr. Fate with him. Equinox knew of the land's stories and planned on having Batman sacrifice him to the gyroscope and help him ascend. After Equinox fell into it, the gyroscope exploded, and then the city itself exploded. Dr. Fate managed to teleport with Batman just in time.
