The Washington Monument was constructed in Washington D.C. as a tribute to the first President of the United States of America, General George Washington. In 1836, Robert Mills was chosen as the Monument's architect who designed a Greek column that would stand as a symbol of patriotism. It called for the construction of a 600 foot tall true obelisk with a flat roof and standing in a chariot. The entrance was to be adorned with the Egyptian-style Winged sun.

Many scoffed at the $1 million price, $21 million in the modern era. Construction began in 1848 utilizing granite, marble, and sandstone. A lack of funds and the Civil War stalled the Monument's completion. The completed Washington Monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885 and officially opened on October 9, 1888. Standing east of the Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Monument, the Washington Monument is the world's tallest stone structure, world's tallest obelisk, and tallest structure in the capitol.
