In 1886, the French gifted the United States of America with the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of their alliance and the 100 year anniversary of the United States' freedom. Since then, it has been an iconic symbol of America and is one of the first things seen by visitors to Europe. The appearance of the robed woman borrow from Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. The Statue holds a torch for enlightenment and a tablet for knowledge and is engraved with the date when the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The crown's seven spikes represent the seven seas and seven continents.

When a time fissure appeared on the torch, Batman went to the future in search of a cure for a rare disease. As a safeguard, he hid a time capsule with a weapon in the left nostril of the Statue. Kamandi later used the weapon to fight off Ratmen.
