Red Kryponite is a rare form of Kryptonite and has many bizarre and unpredictable side effects on Kryptonians. While drifting in space, some Green Kryptonite passed through a red cloud and became Red Kryptonite. Only Batman, Superman, and Lex Luthor know of its existence. Luckily, the effect only lasts 24 hours.
During a series of rare gem thefts in Bludhaven and Star City, Luthor gathered enough Red Kryptonite to forge a necklace and new signal watch for Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, respectively. Thinking the items were a gift from Superman, the two wore their gifts immediately. They exposed Superman to the Red Kryptonite while he stopped Toyman. This time, Superman became a rude, selfish, sadistic creep. He disrupted the weather, tied up traffic, put a cat up in a tree, shook up Kandor, kicked Krypto out of the Fortress of Solitude, and declared himself king of Metropolis. Batman confiscated Lane and Olsen's gifts and analyzed them. Then, Batman and Krypto stalled Superman long enough for the effects to wear off.
