The E-Ray, short for Evolution Ray, is an invention of Gorilla Grodd. Determined to evolve the human race into primates, Grodd devised such a device. When exposed, the human's DNA is altered to a primates and the transformation takes place instantly. However, Grodd hadn't perfected it and used unsuspecting cruise ships as testing grounds. After some modification, Grodd went ahead with his plan and converted the E-Ray to a wave pulse with an initial 500 mile radius. Batman was able to sabotage it and reverted everyone into humans.
