Krypto was the family pet of the El family on the planet Krypton. Jor-El elected Krypto to test a prototype rocket ship but was knocked off course. The ship drifted in space for years until it detected the ship that carried Kal-El and landed on Earth. Krypto emerged and found Kal-El. The two immediately bonded and Krypto the Super Dog became an ally of Superman. He is based in the Fortress of Solitude but occassionally accompanied Superman on missions.
In recent times, Krypto was ousted from the Fortress by Superman, who was infected by Red Kryptonite. Under the temporary care of Batman, Krypto briefly stayed at the Batcave. Upon learning of the Red Kryptonite, Batman donned battle armor and returned to Metropolis with Krypto to fight Superman until the effects wore off. Krypto held his own against Superman and also rescued Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane.
