Steppenwolf was once the military commander of Apokolips. His love of the hunt led to his demotion. Steppenwolf's weapon of choice is an electric axe. Through some twist of events, Steppenwolf was recruited by Mongal to fight on War World. He quickly became the undisputed champion and developed arrogance toward any challengers. After Hex disarmed him, Steppenwolf fought Batman in hand to hand combat. Batman was victorious and defeated Steppenwolf.
In Mongul's Death Race on Earth, Steppenwolf was allowed to race the other participants. If Steppenwolf won, Mongul would destroy Earth with his Warmoon. However, Batman eventually defeated Steppenwolf and won the race. Steppenwolf and Mongul were taken to be imprisoned on Oa by Guy Gardner.
