In the 2460's, Eobard Thawne was a wealthy young man and science teacher. Unlike his fellow man, Thawne had a nostalgia for the 20th century superheroes, the second Flash Barry Allen, in particular. Then in 2463, a time capsule appeared out of nowhere with the Flash's costume in it. Thawne amplified it with 25th century technology and discovered he had super speed whenever he wore it. After dying the costume in reverse color hues to the Flash, Thawne called himself Professor Zoom and set out to become the greatest criminal in human history. Allen soon appeared in search of the capsule and confiscated the costume from Zoom. He broke out of prison and used Element Z kept in a locket to simulate super speed but was defeated again. Eventually, he created his own Negative Speed Force by duplicating the accident that gave Allen his powers.

Zoom eventually hatched a plan to increase his powers threefold and conquer every era in time. He returned to the past and perpetrated a crime. Barry Allen soon gave chase but couldn't catch him. He called in the first Flash and Kid Flash to help, as Zoom anticipated. He then led them on a world-wide chase which made them reach speeds higher than any attained before to lure them into a lightspeed dimension. Zoom then arranged to transport them to the 25th century but Allen managed to shove his allies back to the present. Zoom imprisoned Allen in a speed generator tied to a device he wore. With Allen's power at his disposal, the villain's own velocity increased and he went about taking over his own time. As Lord Zoom, he established an authoritative regime in his image. Zoom longed to capture the other two Flashes but two years later, he got his second chance. They and Batman arrived in search of Allen. Batman attempted to gather as many speed bracelets and confronted Zoom. However, Zoom was too powerful and almost vibrated Batman to death when Barry Allen fought him and won.
