Dr. Charles Langley constructed a giant sentient robot powered by a miniature nuclear reactor for the American government. Langley declared the robot to be called "Mr. Atom." Langley made a fatal miscalculation and triggered an explosion that brought Mr. Atom online but it was also born evil. Mr. Atom decided it should rule the world and rampaged in Washington D.C. until it was defeated by Captain Marvel. Mr. Atom was imprisoned underground in a special lead-lined cell to neutralize its powers. But soon enough it was freed by would be allies.
