10 years before his death, a French scientist selected a prominent gorilla for his grand experiment. Using electrocution treatments and secret teaching methods, he raised the gorilla's intelligence to 178. With its newfound abilities, the gorilla learned may languages, including English and French, and took the name Monsieur Mallah. After the scientist died, Mallah proceeded with his instructions. It removed the scientist's brain and placed it in a special receptacle. The scientist was reborn as the Brain. Together, the two tried to take over the world numerous times only to be defeated by the Doom Patrol and other super heroes, such as Batman.
Monsieur Mallah allied with Gorilla Grodd and Gorilla Boss to form Gorillas and Apes Seizing Power (G.A.S.P.), to take over the world with their numbers and intellectual prowess. G.A.S.P. invaded Gotham City and took over after capturing B'Wana Beast and Vixen. When they linked up with Batman and Detective Chimp, Mallah was defeated by the martial arts of Chimp. Mallah and the Brain joined in General Zahl's plot and attacked the Chief at his mansion in Midway City. Batman arrived to lend a hand. The two villains later resurfaced on Zahl's ship only to be defeated by Batman again. They were taken away by the authorities.
