Leonard Snart was raised by an abusive father. Snart's fondest memories were of the times he spent with his grandfather, who operated an ice truck. Eventually, Snart turned to crime. In Central City, Snart often was defeated by the Flash. Snart devised an experimental hand gun that would interfere with the Flash's super speed. The gun was accidentally irradiated and Snart discovered he created a Cold Gun. Snart created a costume with a parka and special goggles which minimized the effect of the flashes given off by the gun and became Captain Cold. He later joined a group of villains called the Rogues who opposed the Flash.
Two years after the Flash was kidnapped by Professor Zoom, Captain Cold teamed up with Heat Wave and Weather Wizard to rob a First Bank branch near the Flash Museum. When Batman arrived, he and the others had contempt for his lack of style compared to their late enemy. When Batman, the first Flash, and Kid Flash returned to the present with the Flash, Cold and company were brought to tears but openly denied their affections. The second Flash went back to work and took down the villains.
