Dr. Thomas Wayne was a gifted surgeon and philanthropist and part of the fifth generation in the Wayne line. The Wayne family fortune was built through industry and real estate centuries ago. Dr. Wayne served as chairman of Wayne Enterprises but preferred to practice medicine at Gotham City Hospital. He often deferred business operations to his board members. Martha Wayne was the heir to the Kane family fortune, who founded a lucrative chemical company. Martha was infamous as a party girl and socialite. Over time, she developed a social awareness and campaigned many charity events. Martha soon met Dr. Wayne and the two fell in love and had a son named Bruce.
Seven years later, when the Wayne's walked home from watching the movie "The Mark of Zorro," Joe Chill approached them. He demanded their money and jewels. However, Chill shot and killed both Thomas and Martha Wayne. The couple was buried near their home Wayne Manor. 18 years later, Bruce Wayne paid his respects and reiterated his vow to them. On March 11th, an injured and bleeding Wayne returned home. While venting his frustrations to a bust of Thomas Wayne, a bat crashed into the room and landed on the bust. Wayne took this as a sign from his father and summoned Alfred Pennyworth to patch up his wounds.
