Sarah Essen is a native of Chicago. A generation back, Essen's family arrived in America from Germany. She was told she was too masculine for six careers before becoming a police officer. During the debut of Batman, Detective Essen returned to Gotham City from Lakeside to assist in the manhunt. She and Lieutenant Gordon grew close to each other and began an affair together on June 17th. On September 2nd, Gordon broke off the affair. Essen decided to request a transfer and moved to New York City.
