Selina Kyle witnessed the deaths of her parents, Brian and Maria Kyle, when they killed themselves. Kyle was remanded to the Sprang Hall Juvenile Detention Center but she ran away and lived on the streets of Gotham City. She ended up in the district known as the East End and worked as a prostitute. To protect herself, Kyle studied karate. She also befriended Holly Robinson and the two shared an apartment room. On March 11th, Kyle watched a street fight in progress. When she watched Bruce Wayne swat Robinson aside for stabbing him, Kyle leapt from her window and fought Wayne one-on-one. Two police officers arrived and ended the battle.

After Batman's encounter with the police at an abandoned tenement, Kyle was inspired by Batman. On June 17th, she punched out Stan, the pimp, and declared she was changing jobs. On August 7th, Kyle took up a costumed identity of her own: Catwoman. Catwoman engaged herself in a series of daring thefts. On October 12th, a fourth robbery was reported. Catwoman stole Police Commissioner Loeb's private collection of pop memorabilia. Further annoyed, Catwoman learned the thefts were being attributed to Batman. Catwoman chose mob boss Carmine Falcone as her next target. On November 2nd, she infiltrated Falcone's compound which indirectly disrupted Batman's intelligence gathering mission. Batman promptly took out Falcone and his men then left. The bewildered Catwoman then roughed up Falcone, putting him in the hospital. The news billed Catwoman as Batman's assistant. Undaunted, she continued stealing unaware her previous action caused Lieutenant Gordon's family to be kidnapped.
