Rudy Jones was once a lowly janitor at the Metropolis-based S.T.A.R. Labs. Jones was disrespected and belittled all of his life and secretly carried a grudge against those with power. Jones tried to smuggle industrial waste out of S.T.A.R. to sell. He was exposed to the waste and was transformed by it, which turned out to be an isotope. It catalyses energy absorption in human cells.
Jones was mutated into a monstrosity and soon discovered that he had to regularly drain the life force of another living being in order to survive like a Parasite. Contact with the Parasite will leave a victim weakened and prolonged contact would surely lead to death. He became obsessed with absorbing Superman's energy and tried to kidnap him for years to use him as an everlasting battery.
While incarcerated at Stryker's Island, Parasite become bloated on power he feed on from Clark Kent, who was fatally overdosed with solar radiation. Parasite pursued Kent and Lex Luthor into the common area where the other prisoners rioted. Parasite fed on the inmates and converted the kinetic energy of bullets, shot at him by prison guards, into more mass. During the confusion, Kent creates a cave-in on Parasite. Luthor then beat the defenseless Parasite senseless.
