Raven was born in a realm of interdimensional space called Azarath to her mother Arella. The people of Azarath provided Arella with sanctuary and looked into Raven's future. They sensed a prophecy in which she would bring destruction to Earth on her birthday for her father, Trigon the Terrible. Despite this, Arella and Azarath raised Raven with no prejudice. As she grew up, they taught her the ways of peace through meditation and educated her well. Raven became fluent in multiple languages: English, German, Latin, Romanian, ancient Sumerian, and Sanskrit. She was taught the ways of Hindu tradition, as well. She and her mother wear an Anja Chakra, the chakra of the mind, to symbolize oneness and unity. As the sixth primary chakra, it reveals insight of the future. As Raven meditates, she repeats a mantra taught to her: Azarath, Metrion, Zinthos. This helps her concentrate her emotions and control her soul, preventing her father's influence from taking over.

Raven believed in her future and decided to try and do good things and fight evil on Earth to make up for what she would do. She traveled to Earth and arrived in Jump City, California. Soon enough, she encountered Robin, Beast Boy, Cyborg, and Starfire. She suggested they try to reason with Starfire than fight her. When the threat of the Gordanians loomed over the city, Robin and Cyborg embraced her help. After the aliens were defeated, Raven agreed to stay in communication with everyone and even found Beast Boy funny. Soon after, she helped form the Teen Titans and moved into the Titans Tower. However, the rest of the team didn't know very much about her other than she liked the color blue, reading, chess, and herbal tea. Afraid of what their reaction to her would be, Raven remained cynical, withdrawn, and reclusive. Her file was restricted from being read on the Titans computer. Raven also became irritated by Beast Boy and took a year to get used to him.

Raven restricted her team mates from entering her room and they respected her wishes, for awhile. Her knowledge of the supernatural occult is apparent once inside. She has an extensive library that includes the Book of Azar, a novel about Malchior of Nol, Galyan Scrolls, Mornal Archives, Stones of Sur, Book of Nord, Endrial Verses, The Romanomicon, Bersian Chronicle, and a book on the prehistory of Earth. Raven also keeps several antiquities including a mirror that aids in her meditation and acts as a portal into her mind.

After a chilling run in with Dr. Light, Beast Boy and Cyborg snuck into Raven's room for answers. They found her mirror and were transported into Raven's mind. There, they encountered other aspects of Raven-Happy, Timid, Brave, Anger-all dressed in different colored cloaks. Raven found them and implored them to escape as she fought her anger, manifested as Trigon. Instead, they remained by her side and fought. Raven reconnected with her other selves to gain more power and was briefly donned in white. She had enough strength to defeat and absorb her anger once again.

Raven continued to connect with her team mates over the years and open up to them. When Raven and Starfire were trapped in each other's bodies, thanks to the Puppet King, they were forced to tell each other about themselves in order to activate their super powers. Some time later, she recognized how Cyborg put his passion and soul into the T-Car only to see it stolen and destroyed. Together, they reconstructed the team vehicle. However, Raven also became a magnet for other forms of mischief, too. When an alien dog was on the loose and its owner kidnapped Beast Boy, the Titans pursued the dog. Along the way, the dog routinely jumped Raven and drooled on her without hesitation. Raven was later manipulated by Malchior to release him from his prison in a book. In a week, he taught her 6000 pages of spells, charms, and incantations in order to free him. She realized they were all dark magic but she went along with helping him. But after his true colors were revealed, the Titans defeated and resealed him. In a desperation to save Robin from himself, Raven entered his mind and peered into his thoughts, learning his past along the way, and tried to free him from Slade's hold.

Soon after, when Terra appeared in Jump City, Robin and Raven were skeptical. For Raven, she had to work everyday to hold back her powers and for the rest of her life. To encounter Terra, who all of a sudden, could control hers, was unbearable. Raven tried to trust her but her fears were confirmed when Terra was revealed to be the new apprentice of Slade. In the aftermath, the Titans tried everything they could to reverse Terra's transformation into stone. However, not even Raven's spells worked. They continued to try to save her over the years without success.

Things got even more weird and bizarre when Beast Boy stood up to Raven's sarcasm. He was subjected to an electrochemical reaction that unleashed a primal aspect of himself. When a bestial Adonis broke into the Titans Tower and attacked Raven, Beast Boy intervened. Raven went into a healing trace as the two and the Titans fought each other. Soon after, the Titans were kidnapped by the Amazing Mumbo. Unimpressed and changed into a white rabbit, Raven was forced to be Mumbo's assistant in his latest show, "Mumbo's Menagerie or a Cottontail of Woe." To Raven, Mumbo's magic was merely a slight of hand and wasn't up to par with hers. However, in the end, she and the Titans used his own skills against him and freed themselves. Following Cyborg's disappearance, the team locked onto his sonic cannon frequency, 5000 years in the past! Raven used her power to open a portal and pull him back. She was later intrigued to see Cyborg depicted in one of her books as the only warrior in a battle without armor.

However, on her latest birthday, Slade returned from the dead with a message: the prophecy would soon be fulfilled. He marked her with inscriptions of Scath and revealed she was the portal to which Trigon would use to arrive on Earth. Despite being a bad cook and not sociable, Raven tried to make the last day on Earth the happiest for her friends. When the realized the truth, they fought to protect her in vain. Raven accepted her destiny and freed Trigon. Trapped in another realm as a child, Robin challenged destiny and rescued her. He pleaded with her to still have hope. In the final stand against Trigon, Raven used her power to reseal Trigon and save the planet from his terror. The Titans consoled her and she agreed to embrace new beginnings. However, she wouldn't predict that would include becoming the mascot for a Japanese gum.

One year later, as the Teen Titans journeyed across the globe to recruit other heroes, Raven was tasked with transporting three children with powers to a cathedral sanctuary that agreed to raise them. After meeting Melvin, Timmy, and Teether at the Myrberg Station in the Alps, Raven was attacked by Monsieur Mallah. Forced to take a longer and more dangerous alternative path, Raven slowly bonded with the children and was shocked to see Melvin's imaginary friend, Bobby, was real.

Before returning home, the Titans split off to complete one last round of recruitments. Raven ventured to Dimension X to find Herald. Soon after, each Titan was attacked by several members of the Brotherhood of Evil. Raven was ambushed by Kyd Wykkyd and Psimon but escaped capture. She regrouped and teleported herself and the children to Paris for the final battle against the Brotherhood of Evil.
