The power rings of the Green Lantern Corps are considered to be the most powerful weapon in the universe. Thousands of the years ago, the Guardians of the Universe forged this technology in their campaign to police the known 3600 space sectors. Those who are chosen to wield a ring are usually at the scrutiny of the Guardians. The power of the rings are limited only by the willpower of its user. This willpower is most important in the generation of electromagnetic solid light constructs that act as defensive and offensive measures of the Green Lantern.

In addition, the rings provide its user's flight, personal force fields, uniforms, energy scanning, language translation, recorders, storage, and communication. It also follows voice commands and can be summoned remotely. These features lead many to conclude that the ring is an advanced miniature computer. As a failsafe, when a Green Lantern is killed in action, the ring automatically seeks out a successor.

Despite its omnipotence, the rings have its share of weaknesses. The power rings can hold a full charge for 24 hours then must be recharged by a Green Lantern's personal battery. After inserting the ring into the battery, the Green Lantern counts the time needed for a full charge by reciting the Green Lantern Oath. The battery resembles a lantern and is connected to the Central Battery located at headquarters on planet Oa. As a safeguard, the Guardians also made sure the rings had a flaw built in to each ring, they are unable to directly affect the color yellow. This ultimately prevented any one Green Lantern from becoming too powerful and to stretch their range of imagination in hostile situations. Since the ring is dependant on the user's willpower, telepathic attacks on the user can render the ring useless.

On a parallel Earth, the power ring also exists but it is associated with the mystic arts and a person named Volthoom. A man seeking power sought out the ring became Power Ring. It is similar to the Green Lantern's and generates green spectrum energy but appears to be worn as a gauntlet. It is equal in strength to the Green Lantern.
