Dr. Leslie Thompkins is a friend of the late Thomas Wayne and helped raise Bruce Wayne. She is a stronger voice against his vigilantism than Alfred Pennyworth. Jason Todd, as Robin, was treated at Dr. Thompkins's Mercy Gotham Clinic in Crime Alley. She noted he suffered more wounds in two weeks than Dick Grayson did in two years. She voiced her concern. Todd brushed it off as a scratch and sarcastically referred to her as "Mom." Thompkins responded if she was his mother, she would have put him to bed two hours ago, with straps if necessary. She applied a bandage roughly to make him squirm. She warned him he was too headstrong and was taking too many chances. Todd assured her he could handle himself and boasted Rupert Thorne just found that out. Thompkins saw no difference with the millions of kids that came through her door and warned him he would meet his match someday and no one would be around to save him. Four years later, Batman feared for Leslie Thompkins' safety and went to her Mercy Gotham Clinic in Crime Alley. Thompkins commended a little girl named Keri for coming to her quick to treat a bad cut. She prepared a tetanus shot.

Keri stated she wasn't scared but was startled by Batman appearing behind Thompkins. Thompkins noted she hadn't started yet. Keri pointed to Batman. Thompkins assured her he wouldn't hurt her. Keri already knew he wouldn't hurt a child. Thompkins gave her a shot and told her to get home. Batman advised her to watch where she was going so she wouldn't get into anymore accidents. Keri thanked him and hurried home, excited she now knew Batman. Thompkins was amused by his advice and reiterated the clinic wasn't his personal emergency room. Batman cut her off and informed her Jason Todd was alive. Thompkins couldn't believe it. Batman assured her he was alive but angrier than ever. He figured he would come to see her since he always liked her. He warned her that Todd had been stalking him. Thompkins yelled at him and admonished him for letting Todd run wild as Robin. Batman countered he was going to end it but he bolted.

Thompkins didn't accept that and told him Todd was his responsibility, hers, Alfred's and he made them all culpable in what happened. She teared up and turned her back on him. She apologized and told him to leave. Just as Batman was about to step out the door. Thompkins apologized for lashing out. She understood he was hurt more than anyone, but she believed there might be a bigger cost to what happened. Red Hood broke into the Gotham Mercy clinic and picked the lock on a unit. Leslie Thompkins heard a noise and turned on the lights. Red Hood sarcastically thanked her for turning on the light so he could read the labels. She recognized his voice as Jason Todd's and relayed Batman told her he was alive then asked him why he was wearing the mask. He called it an old story and mused Batman would tell her it, too. She demanded he take the mask off. He grabbed her wrist and warned her he had some work done on his face so he wasn't as pretty anymore. He added he wasn't as patient and shoved her.

Thompkins stated she always knew he was wild but she never thought he would become a thief. He countered he would be saving more lives with the medication than she ever would then asked why she cared since she could just call Bruce Wayne for more money. He recalled they had a falling out over him and joked about being so touched. Thompkins pleaded with him to stop and suggested they all sit down and talk. Red Hood stated he was not crazy and she was no psychiatrist then suggested she stick to Band-Aids and Bactine. He teased he had to do something that was a long time coming. As he left, Red Hood advised her to call Wayne Manor and check on Alfred Pennyworth since he didn't leave him in good shape. She called. Batman assured Leslie Thompkins that Alfred Pennyworth was fine. Thompkins emphasized her feelings had not changed but she asked him to do what he had to do because something was wrong. She asked him to save Todd then hung up.
