Bruce Wayne secretly operates as Batman, a masked vigilante who employs his brains and brawn to keep watch over his home Gotham City. He is aided by his butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Supposedly on one fateful night, Batman intervened in a shoot out between security and the Red Hood Mob in the Ace Chemical Plant. He confronted Red Hood but the man inside lost his bearings, slipped on his cape, and fell into a vat of chemicals. That man survived and became the Joker. Years into his costumed career, Batman took on Batgirl as a partner. Almost three years later, Batman was summoned to the rooftop of police headquarters. Commissioner Gordon and Detective Bullock briefed him on a robbery of an armored car led by Paris Franz, a sociopath and nephew of Gotham's biggest crime boss, Carlos Francesco. Batman tailed Franz' big rig truck in the Batmobile while Batgirl jumped onto the roof and planted an exploding Batarang on the rear. The blast blew the cargo doors open.

Batman fired a harpoon inside and pulled the armored car outside onto the street. He caught up to Batgirl and side swiped an armed thug. He woke him with a smelling salt and requested time alone to ask some questions. The next night, he arrived at a warehouse after Franz' gang fled the scene. Batman found Batgirl on the roof across the street and gave her a coffee. He believed she should have waited for him but she felt she had to do something to stall for time. Batman shared the information from the police's file on Franz and ordered her not to go near Franz without him. She didn't take to the orders and questioned them. Batman reiterated if she wanted to work with him, she had to do what he said then fired his grapling gun and left. Batman later got a video from the police left by Franz for Batgirl. He didn't like that Franz wasn't afraid or how he made the situation personal and benched Batgirl from the case. He left for the warehouse Franz broke into to search for the 'gift' he alluded to in the video.

He made his way to Francesco's office building and put down Francesco's men on the seventh floor. He admonished Batgirl for letting Franz play her. She insisted she was doing what he taught her, hunting. He didn't think so and believed she was trying to prove something and let her ego cloud her judgment. Batgirl thought they were partners. Batman confirmed they were but they weren't equals. He stated it was still a game for her and warned her about falling off the edge into the abyss where all hope dies. Batgirl wouldn't stand of his metaphysical statement and accused him of getting overprotective. He told her to quit. She exclaimed she was in it because of him and did whatever he said. She attacked him. She eventually kicked him, flipped and pinned him. She kissed him and they had sex. They didn't talk since. A few nights later, Batman followed up on a tip that Franz was on the move and hiding out at the docks. He answered a call from Batgirl but turned down her offer to join the search. She wanted to know if things were going back to the way they were after Franz was captured but Batman only said they would talk later.

Batgirl tried to plead with him but he ended the call. Suddenly, the Batmobile took a shot from a bazooka and fell on its side. Franz fired another shot. Batman ejected in time but pulled shrapnel from his ribs. Batman took cover by some crates and took out two of Franz' men with Batarangs. Batgirl arrived on her motorcycle and knocked out Franz' accomplice Lonny then dragged Franz into a stack of crates. She lost control and beat him to a pulp. Batman walked over to her as she stopped and regained her senses. She decided to step down as Batgirl and met with Batman. She gave him a bag carrying her gear and stated she understood he couldn't protect the city and someone he cared about at the same time. She admitted the abyss was tempting but didn't know how he resisted it for so long. She told him to be careful and left. A week later, Batman was called to a Gotham Storage locker. Detective Bullock was waiting inside, where there were four dead conventioneers seated before a stage and microphone with Joker's infamous smiles on their faces.

They speculated they were the missing men from a dentists' convention three years ago. He requested to talk to Commissioner Gordon. They met up at Arkham Asylum to visit the Joker. Gordon warned Batman it was a mistake to think he knew what the Joker would do. Batman insisted he wasn't visiting because of the case. He sat in Joker's cell and made a genuine attempt to talk things over before the inevitable, one killed the other. He grabbed the Joker's right hand and realized it was an imposter after some powder came off. He continued to ask "nicely" as Gordon berated him about laws against mistreating inmates. Batman returned to the Batcave and looked over old Joker case photos, trying to figure out his next move. Alfred Pennyworth brought him a drink. Pennyworth found it comforting Batman didn't know. Batman realized after all these years, they didn't know a thing about each other. Pennyworth warned Batman not to underestimate him and that he couldn't save everyone. Batman wondered how two people could hate so much without even knowing each other.

Batman was called to the hospital and learned Barbara Gordon was shot by the Joker and the Commissioner, kidnapped. The attending physician concluded she would never walk again. Batman requested time alone with her. She woke up in a panic about her father and told him what he said about proving a point. She feared for her father's life. Batman went into the city and attacked thugs known to be affiliated with the Joker. He shoved one into a wall and gave him the count of 10. He swore to God the Joker wasn't around. Batman increased the pressure. He swore it was the truth and he would have come around recruiting by now. Batman tore down a wanted poster and blasted his way into a club. He put down the bouncers and questioned Maroni, a crime boss, about the Joker. Maroni didn't know anything either and would have told him if he did. He admitted his kind were afraid of Batman, but were terrified of the Joker. He went to a bridge and questioned some callgirls but they hadn't been visited by him either. One of the girls noticed the Batsignal in the sky.

Batman arrived at police headquarters. Bullock handed him a personalized envelope. Inside was free admission for one to the Bonus Brothers Carnival and Amusement Park. Batman drove to the park and saw one of the long dead owners. The carnival lit up and the Joker greeted him on the p.a. system. He fought through the carnival's freak show carnies one by one until the Joker showed himself. Joker presented his main attraction, the Average Man. It was Commissioner Gordon, stripped naked and supposedly driven mad, in a cage. Batman tackled the Joker but his cane emitted acid on his arm. Batman sprayed the burn then released Gordon and clothed him. Gordon ordered Batman to bring the Joker in by the book to prove he was wrong. Batman entered the funhouse of mirrors. The Joker believed he demonstrated there was no difference between himself and everyone else, that all it took was one bad day. He believed Batman experienced it but wouldn't admit he went crazy. Joker's deformed henchmen attacked Batman near a spike trap door.

Batman fought them off and fired a grapnel to the ceiling. He scaled the stairwell dressed like a seedy apartment and entered a room where everything was arranged upside down. The Joker preferred to remember his past in multiple choice and attacked Batman with various utensils and furniture, proclaiming he was smart enough to admit he was crazy. Joker demanded to know why Batman didn't see the funny side. Batman countered him and stated he heard the joke before and it wasn't funny the first time. Batman declared Gordon was sane as ever and his thesis was wrong. Joker pulled a gun but Batman tackled him out the window. They struggled but Joker found his gun and fired. It was a prop flag gun. Joker tossed it and invited Batman to kick the hell out of him to get his standing ovation. Batman refused and instead offered a chance at working together towards rehabilitation. Batman asked to let him help. Joker said he was sorry and turned it down. He stated it was far too late for that. He recalled a joke about two inmates escaping an asylum by roof top. One was afraid of heights so they other offered to shine his flashlight across to use as a bridge. The scared inmate asserted he would just turn it off midway. Batman laughed with the Joker.
